Erskine 5th graders present compelling issues from their countries

On December 17th, students from Erskine, Viola Gibson, and Johnson elementary schools assembled for the first annual Cedar Rapids Elementary Model United Nations (CREMUN) at the Downtown Public Library. Each student represented a different country and presented position statements, worked on resolutions, caucused, made amendments, and voted to accept two final resolutions. Issues discussed included Terrorism in Iraq, Piracy in Somalia, Pollution in China, Working Conditions in Bangladesh, and Right to Education in India.  Earlier in the semester, each child had studied a country in depth—researching the land, the people, the economy, the government, and compelling issues.  This information was presented on display boards during the conference.  A luncheon was enjoyed by all consisting of dishes that students shared from all over the world.  A special thank you to Mrs. Zange, who worked with these students all trimester and helped organize this exciting event!
